Just spent the last hour detailing and cleaning my GPU. (EVGA Geforce GTX 970 FTW+ Edition) Took it apart completely and cleaned everything with 91% rubbing alcohol, an air rag and a new brush (extra dust) for the finishing touches. I did all the back and mid plates, heatsinks, motherboard, fans, removed the old thermal paste and reapplied some of this new Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut paste. 100% fan) The GPU got so hot that I lost almost 200MHz of clock speed when pushing temperature limits and overclocking myself. ) 22 degrees internal temperature 33 degrees idle 59 degrees under load (60% fan) Also, I got my boost clock back and can now overclock the thing again. Box direct from the factory. (If I remember correctly it ran around 70-75 degrees Celsius under load, brand new) Suffice it to say I didn't expect the results to be so positive. Sure, it was dirty, full of dust balls, and the factory thermal paste was fried. The only small downside I can say about this material is that it's a bit more difficult to work with. Definitely a bit thicker and harder to spread compared to materials like Artic Silver or IC Diamond. Still, it only took me a minute or two to apply it. All in all, you couldn't be happier! . Unfortunately I haven't done a controlled experiment with simple cleaning to know for sure. But I will say that the standard thermal paste on this thing was dry and fried. But to what extent they influenced the end result, I can't say for sure.
