I am always wary of hanging anything heavy on the walls of my 1920's house because the walls are plastered and studs are hard to find. Normal nail finders are made for drywall and don't work on plaster. Googling I found some tips on using strong magnets to find the nails in the studs. I'm happy to report that I was able to use these magnets to locate the studs and installed a heavy duty hanging table by bolting it directly to the studs. A good tip is to use painters tape once you've found the post to indicate the post's position up and down the wall - it's roughly the width of the post and means you don't need to mark the wall.
