Review on Efficiently Maintain Your Toilet: KOHLER GENUINE PART 87998 Small Flush Valve Kit by Michael Dixon

This part works well but it is counterfeit because the defective original part I had to replace is wrong in design. The top of the toilet tank meets the piece of plastic at the very top of the valve (where the fill hose is clipped to it) and allowing the piece of black plastic to separate from the top of the canister assembly. You can't just buy a broken piece of plastic. You have to buy the whole canister assembly - lots of parts you have to pay for but don't need. I figured it would be best to replace the entire canister assembly since I now have all new parts, but when I read the instructions on how to install the canister assembly I got very frustrated because you have to remove the entire toilet tank. . You must be joking. Instead, I decided to just replace the really broken part. I simply unscrewed the center column (with the broken part) by turning it counterclockwise 1/4 turn, took it off and used (only) that part of the whole new build. It was quick and easy (thankfully) but Koehler has to sell the part that breaks so you don't have to buy the entire canister valve assembly. Also, the new canister build I got isn't quite the same as the picture - it's a better design. It doesn't have that brittle plastic part on top - the plastic part where the flexible hose goes in and which breaks when the top of the tank hits it. Instead, the top of the replacement assembly I received has a very small and simple nozzle that I put a plastic hose over. Since the new one doesn't have that flimsy plastic cup lid anymore, it sinks deeper into the toilet tank and the tank lid doesn't hit. I'm very glad Koehler improved the design in this way, but they should still only sell replacements for the old, weak part that breaks so we don't have to pay for the entire assembly.
