Review on Chinese Calligraphy Brush Sumi Writing/Painting Set (12 Pieces) by Phillip Samuel

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Low quality but ok to find out if you like Japanese painting.

The brushes are low quality and loose easily hair. Not sure if the ink stick is of low quality. The ink stone is ok. The soap stone has to be carved by your self to be used as a stamp, but it was fun to do it. I like the box and the porcelain pices, also the are pretty smal. To get deeper into sumi e ore caliggraphy you will whant to buy better brushes. So summing it up it's a starte kit.

Pros
  • Chinese Ink Writing Mode: If you are experienced or you become an old hand at Chinese Calligraphy Writing, then it is time to go from water writing mode to ink writing mode. It's better to use Chinese calligraphy paper instead of water writing cloth when you write in ink. When grinding ink, just use the spoon to get the right amount of water out of the porcelain bowl to put on the ink stone. It is also nice to write Japanese and Kanji
Cons
  • Ink or paint may have a strong odor
