It's not really necessary, but it's fast and consistent.
I am an artisan who loves making jewelry, mainly threading and reworking broken or vintage jewelry. I can make loops out of wire and needles and I really didn't need this thing but I couldn't resist. This is what makes the loops so easy and they are true to size. The only small downside is that the size of the loop in millimeters doesn't change. You need to buy a different tool for a different buttonhole size. I'm glad I treated myself to this and I think it would make a great gift for anyone who works with jewelry.
