I also found it almost impossible to replace the head. However, the instructions clearly state that the head must be fully opened before removing and replacing the jaws. After the frustration of the non-removable sponge subsided, I forced my head open fully and then felt stupid for not doing it in the first place. I would suggest that negative reviewers flex their muscles, open their heads fully and reevaluate their reviews. Durability is another issue.
