Review on πŸ’Ύ 120 GB OCZ Vertex 2 SATA II 2.5" SSD (OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G) by Ricky Mills

Revainrating 5 out of 5

It's great when it works. Undetected in 75% of the cases. Finally dead.

I bought this SSD as my main boot drive for Windows to speed up my computer. The difference in my computer's performance (boot time, application launch time, etc.) was amazing! Problem: The drive was very inconsistently recognized by my ASUS H87M PLUS motherboard. This meant that on each reboot it took 2-5 reboot attempts before the drive was recognized. The rest of the time the SATA port showed up as empty so I didn't have a boot drive and had to turn off the device or press ctrl-alt-del to try again until I got lucky. And yes I have tried all sorts of hardware and software tweaks and solutions found on the internet as this is a very well documented problem with these drives. Since I leave my computer on most of the time, I could live with this problem that occurred when I had to reboot for some reason. I lived with this situation for exactly 4 years until almost 2 weeks ago when the drive finally seemed to die. Luckily I had all my personal files and data on other drives as it was just a boot/windows drive that also had some of my apps installed. However, since I didn't have proper backups, I had to buy another drive and go through the painful process of reinstalling every app I previously had. I've lost settings and preferences for most of these applications, which is very inconvenient (it's all my fault for not backing up the drive). I tried the drive on 3 other computers and the result is always the same: the computer doesn't recognize it at all, despite the green light visible in the drive. I've tried several reset methods suggested on the web (leave the drive plugged in for a few hours, leave it plugged in for a day, just plug in the data cable for a while, just plug in the power cord for a while, etc.) to no avail. So now I have an OCZ brick. I am disappointed that it failed in just 4 years. I have hard drives much older than this one and they are used a lot more and still work. I bought a new Samsung 850 EVO 500GB drive and it's been working great since I installed it. During the installation of Windows and all my applications, my computer restarted at least 40-50 times and the motherboard didn't recognize the hard drive once. This tells me the problem was always with the OCZ drive and not with my motherboard or my settings. I can't recommend this drive but I 100% recommend moving to an SSD as your boot drive and so far my vote is Samsung's.
