In the original instructions, the seller says "either cook the wood or soak it in hot water" to leach the tannins out of the wood. I recommend boiling as I now have freshwater lice in my shrimp tank. I haven't added anything new to the tank in the last 3 months other than firewood and daily feeding. I soaked my firewood for over a week but I was so frustrated that I didn't cook it. My aquarium is infested and there doesn't seem to be anything I can do to get rid of this unwanted pest from my aquarium. Very dissatisfied with myself for not cooking them first and very dissatisfied with this purchase.
