My 4.5 month old girl got stuck between the boards twice, once with her hand and once with her foot. She screamed and needed "rescue". I know it's not life threatening, but it's definitely uncomfortable and/or scary. When it was her leg, she had red marks from pushing the bar so hard. Babies don't realize they can't really stick and straighten their limbs. I didn't want a soft bumper as the kids would choke on it. This bumper is great. Although the instructions are for a one-piece crib (as folding boards are now illegal), it's obviously still the same design for a folding board. If they redesigned it, maybe they wouldn't be as layered when the two parts come together. Then he can be slimmer and look more beautiful. But it works and I'm thankful it exists and is inexpensive. If you follow the instructions, you really won't have any gaps, as one reviewer's photos show. It is durable from all sides. It's lightly padded for those who value comfort. But honestly, I've never seen any of my three kids worry about hitting the bars. :) My only issue is that the two ribbons tied to the center slats front and back are sewn on with a simple straight stitch and are not tight. When I went to install it some tape came off with little or no resistance. I carefully pulled it on as instructed and saw that it wasn't pinned in the middle where I had tied it. The ribbon was still tied but had already popped out from under the satin trim. Nothing bad. I was able to sew it (and attach the ribbon at the back). But it certainly could have been done better. My husband was hesitant to even use it afterwards but I don't see it coming off again. The other side holds up well. Also, the instructions are not clear. But honestly I don't know how they could explain it any better. Assembly is complicated by the nature of the bumper design. It works the way it is and I was able to figure it out through trial and error. A video would be more helpful than written instructions. I had no problems as other reviewers described the baby just pushing the bumper down anyways and sticking out arms and legs. But then my girl is very young. She's tall too, with long arms and legs, so small children will be fine too. I guess if she's old enough for that, then she's old enough to pull her limbs back into her crib. Because it's really really high and I don't see how she can reach the top. Just make sure the bottom of the bumper lines up with the top of the mattress, as you'll usually be attaching a bumper.
