You can open it!
You just have to know where to look. I had to completely disassemble mine to find such a simple little indicator. If you look at the Twist n Sharp logo there is a small arrow on the left side pointing up to show you where to open the door. Otherwise it works exactly as it should and yes, you can open it to remove chips. I even managed to put all the parts together. Love it.
