Review on Food-Grade Revitalizing Mineral Oil: Nourish Your Bamboo and Wood Cutting Boards and More! | Made in the USA | 10oz Bottle by Christy Brewer

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good quality mineral oil, food grade. A bit expensive.

This bottle of edible mineral oil has expired. Part of the lid was torn off, but the protective seal didn't let the contents leak out. With some effort I was able to reattach the part and it seems to be working fine. A few years ago we had a very good (expensive) cutting board that dried out and cracked. I didn't really know how to take care of and maintain a wooden floorboard and this led to her untimely death. We now have several cutting boards, the last of which are bamboo, and we try to maintain them regularly. This mineral oil intended for cutting boards must be food safe. It is crystal clear, like water, with a watery consistency. It is identical to our other mineral oils for wood surfaces. We applied it to a bamboo cutting board and a wooden cheese board. Both must have been drier than I thought due to soaking up the mineral oil. The application of this mineral oil gives the wood a bright, vibrant appearance, as if the wood were damp. By my count we applied two coats to wood surfaces. We checked them out a few hours later and they still looked great. According to the instructions (and previous experience) we leave it overnight and then check it. We will apply another coat if needed but I don't think it will be necessary. If you handle a cutting board (or any wooden surface that will come in contact with food), be sure to rinse/clean the board thoroughly before using it again. The price is $10 for 10 fl oz. a bottle of food grade mineral oil, it seems a bit expensive for the market. The bottle says it's "specially designed for bamboo and wooden cutting boards". However, there is no greater transparency regarding this formula or this process. I suspect the specific formula is a food issue that is essential for any mineral oil used to treat cutting boards or wood surfaces that may come into contact with food. While this is a trustworthy product I would still prefer my current brand which offers more quantity at a lower overall price. Because of these considerations, this competent food-grade mineral oil earns a 4-star rating.
