Review on πŸ“€ Enhanced Portable DVD Player: Panasonic DVD-LS90 with 9-Inch Display by Omar Alradwan

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Very well built and easy to use but the screen could be better

The Panasonic DVD-LS90 portable DVD player is a very well made portable DVD player, unlike other brands you may find at Find Best Buy, Circuit City, Walmart, etc.: Initial, Mintek, Audiovox, Samsung, Shinco, . which often look like they will fall apart after you pick them up. The LS90 has a solid and confident build, an attractive design and is surprisingly light for a portable DVD player with such a large screen, even with the battery attached. LS90 is very easy to use and loads DVDs fast compared to other brands. . (I've had quite a few portable DVD players over the years. I was very happy to see Panasonic returning to this market after a few years' hiatus.) The screen, in classic Panasonic fashion, is 'loose style', meaning a clamshell , which houses the screen, is flexible, and you can adjust the screen by moving it forward and back, much like tilting and telescoping at the same time. This is very convenient when watching DVDs on the subway and holding the player in front of me because I can enlarge the screen without lifting the whole player. The battery life seems amazing. Panasonic claims "up to 6 hours". You know how it is, these companies always exaggerate a little (or a lot). 6 hours of battery life can be achieved by turning the backlight off completely, using headphones, turning down the volume and turning off all virtual surround effects, and playing the DVD continuously (i.e. no pauses, stops, fast forward, rewind, etc. ). .). So no one watches the DVD. In my everyday use, I can get 3.5 to 4 hours of battery life, which is still amazing compared to any other portable DVD player I've owned or used. At the very least, you should be able to finish a long movie like Once Upon a Time in America (Director's Cut, of course!) on a single load and with minimal compromises on settings. The reason I can't give the LS90 five stars is because its cool screen is better. The meaning of two things: 1) it could be brighter. Even at maximum brightness outdoors, the brightness isn't enough. 2) The resolution could be higher. While most high quality DVD videos look fine most of the time, sometimes you may feel that the screen is a little "low definition". To be honest I laughed when I read that someone claimed his/her Mintek had a clearer screen. I've had two Mintek players and their screens are no better (or worse) than the LS90. I'm just a little disappointed considering Panasonic makes some of the best HDTVs out there. For the price (and given that this player is assembled in China using cheap labor) they should have put in a slightly better LCD screen. Conveniently, the player has two headphone jacks so two people can watch a movie or listen to music at the same time. The DVD drive is relatively quiet. While the LS90 is more expensive than other brands, it feels much more durable and reliable, and is quieter and more responsive. Is it worth the extra money? If you're the guy who drives a Buick, Lexus, BMW, or Acura, I bet you'd say yes. Other people like me who drive the Corolla, Civic, Malibus and Neon can still enjoy the high quality and thoughtful convenience that Panasonic has packed into this stylish portable DVD player.
