Skeptical about claims that natural (brown) filters add flavor, I conducted a simple test by pouring freshly boiled water through each filter. I have noticed a mild but distinct "woody" or "papery" odor and taste in water poured through a natural (brown) filter; after cooling, the smell decreased, but the taste remained. A natural filter even tints the water slightly. I don't claim to be able to tell the difference in brewed coffee (especially the dark roasted strong brew I always make), and of course each filter can add a lot that I can't smell. or taste.
