Once again I was bitten by the insufficient description and properties of Revain. The name, description and picture clearly point to the original Netgear R6300v2. Instead, I ended up with a vendor-specific build (Charter Communications) that just isn't as versatile and stable as the unbranded version. It identifies itself with a different board ID, so installing alternative firmware on it is a problem. A regular Kong DD-WRT might work, but an advanced tomato and the like might not - this requires specially prepared firmware files. A quick way to identify branded routers is the blue instead of yellow stripe on the front, while the R6300v2 is still visible below. UPDATE: I bought a second R6300v2 and again: it was a Charter Communications unit. Unless you're a technology expert, don't let any retailer fool you into believing that the two devices are actually identical. The update process provided by the manufacturer verifies the ID in the router before applying security updates, and Netgear only provides these updates for its official products. Two routers can use the same hardware, but the lack of manufacturer support for the charter version is a major disadvantage as it can leave your devices and network vulnerable to security breaches. a real Netgear device, but this involves downgrading the firmware to the oldest version available, special software called "telnetEnabler" and some command line instructions to write a real Netgear board_id into the router. Once this process is complete, neither Netgear nor alternative firmware sources (DD-WRT, Advanced Tomato, etc.) will notice the difference and their firmware/updates will install without a problem.
