Not ready for prime time.

Well, I really wanted a USB hub like that. It was slim and compact and felt good. With this Surface 4 Pro, just one USB 3.0 port would have helped, but the manufacturer promises great and the product's execution leaves a lot to be desired. I'm an IT guy, it's just that I don't do it for a living anymore, so this isn't one of those reviews where you have to wonder if the author knows what he's talking about or not, I do. I will give all the conditions of the review in plain language. This hub is fine IF you only add USB 2.0 speed devices and don't plan on ever removing them. (except the hard drive.) One of the main problems is that as soon as you connect e.g. B. a Bluetooth device and a portable hard drive, these appear, but if you want to just turn off the hard drive and unplug the drive, but no Bluetooth device, very bad, so sad - impossible. This hub treats everything connected to it as 1 item, even if you see them listed individually you can (correctly and safely) remove them all, but not individually. But wait, that's not all! - The speed I tested is NOT 3.0, in fact the hub hiccups constantly and slows down the data transfer even with the simplest single page documents. Three times during my evaluation period the computer wouldn't shut down because the shutdown process between the external hard drive was in an endless loop of useless information going back and forth through the hub. Eventually (after waiting 10 minutes for the shutdown) I had to disconnect the external drive myself from the hub (with a high risk of losing data on the drive and not good for the computer!) since neither the computer nor the external drive would do this by shutting down on its own. (Mind you, I tested this on three different shutdown events.) --- Needs extra power because it's a hard drive, what do you think of that? - Yes, well, the process has been tried with and without an additional 5V power input cable to power the hub. . It doesn't matter, if you try it you'll find that the external drive, and indeed the hub itself, WILL NOT TURN OFF AT ALL when powered from the 5V input connector, even when the computer is off! (The blue lights on the top of the hub keep glowing and the hard drive keeps spinning.) Wow, sad and a deal breaker. Finally, the range is VERY unstable when used with a Bluetooth mouse. You can sometimes stray a few feet, but unfortunately I found that unreliable and it would twitch and jump all over the screen. You need to stay within 9-10 inches max. Even then you'll still get twitches, they'll just minimize them. The only thing that seemed to work well was the RJ-45 cable input. I had no problems. All the gear I used was no more than 3 months old, so there were no issues with my gear. By the way, after I removed the hub and fixed the elements one by one, all the elements worked fine and full 3.0 speed was restored. I would not recommend this device. If I kept trying to use it, I would surely end up with data loss or worse. Two stars can be a bit generous.
