I have very low power WD Green and WD Red drives that run at 5900 RPM but still get very hot. The drive in my PC (without the fan next to it) is at 38°C (100°F), while my very similar drive in this case runs at 48°C (119°F), and that's at 23°C (74°F ) ambient temperature. A more standard 7200rpm desktop drive will certainly get a lot hotter and will likely exceed its maximum temperature and in that case not last long. If you're just using this to move a few files around from time to time, you can get away with it. I arranged for an aluminum case to act as a heatsink and keep my hard drive cool, but no. The hard drive rests on thin, thin plastic rails that do NOT conduct heat from the drive to the case. It's really a shame and there's no good reason to use plastic there. Either get a case that you're sure will make good contact with the aluminum case, or better yet, a case with a built-in fan that's not much more expensive. Fan noise can be annoying, but losing all your data is far worse. The device looks and feels cheap. The hard drive is only held in place by two small foam pads attached to the plastic to keep it from sliding forward off the connector. Small, thin plastic slide rails are only attached to one end of the drive, meaning it doesn't take much force to rotate the drive, and even a small drop can damage the electronics inside. The tiny protrusions on the plastic that fit into the hard drive's screw holes can even snap, leaving your drive free to dangle. The stand is very slim and holds with little friction, so a small bump or two will knock the case out of the stand and cause it to fall off. After 6 months of using this case, typically only 1 hour at a time. Every few weeks my previously perfect WD Green hard drive has 200 unreadable sectors. I can't say definitively that this case is to blame, but high operating temperatures are definitely bad for hard drives and are most likely the only cause of failure. I recently purchased the case I linked above. Despite other reviews, I find the fan in mine to be very, very quiet and the design and build quality is excellent in every way. I'm basically throwing this enclosure away because it's not worth wrecking $200 hard drives to save $5 on a horribly cheap USB enclosure.
