Review on My Arcade Data Classics Player by David Sharma

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Nice retro gaming experience. with a few minor complaints

If you love Burger Time, Shoot Out, Heavy Barrel, Karate Champ (or any of 30 other retro games) then this tiny arcade game comes highly recommended. The emulation is 100% correct and for 80's arcade fans like me this is very important. Many of these retro games are emulated with NES or Atari ROM kits. This doesn't provide a very good replay of most slots in my experience. Luckily, the Data East Classics miniplayer will satisfy even the harshest critic when it comes to the authenticity of the emulation. The screen is decent, although the contrast with deep black leaves something to be desired. However, these 80s arcade games look very vivid and realistic on screen. The controls are amazingly responsive for such a small size. The sound quality is great, plus you can adjust the volume or even listen through headphones if you want. One minor complaint is the adjustment of the display's aspect ratio. You can adjust the settings (Full Screen, 4:3 or Original) by simultaneously holding the COIN + BACK buttons while selecting the aspect ratio and pressing the B button, but only from the main menu. When you're in a specific heading, you're stuck with the selected ratio. It's a minor issue, but you'll keep going back to the main menu to get your settings right. All in all this is a great car. I also recommend the Namco Museum option from My Arcade. It has Pac Man, Galaga, Xevious, Mappy, Dig Dug and over a dozen other retro games. These two machines sit beautifully on my desk at home and take me back to the more carefree days of slot machines in the 1980's and 1990's. Only this time the coins stay in my pocket.
