I bought this backpack with the intention of carrying my dog when he gets too tired on a hike or when there are steep slopes that might be too hard for him back. In any case, he won't sit in it for too long. He seems uncomfortable sticking his head out at the top, but can stick his head out to the side in a seated position. As other reviewers have pointed out, this doesn't work if the dog needs to lie down. The backpack has a solid structure and has additional compartments that can be very useful for supplies. My dog is about 14 pounds and there was no noticeable sagging at the bottom. Mesh walls allow for adequate airflow so very small dogs should sit comfortably inside. The main compartment has snaps that allow the top to be opened halfway to prevent the dog from falling out. There is also a small internal carabiner for attaching to a collar or harness. The cat seems to like it too, so maybe we'll use it for her visits to the vet as well.
