My house has one of those stairwells with a back door if you have to turn to go to the kitchen or straight down to the basement. There is no basement door and the opening is too large for a standard door (no additional frame). It will only be a matter of time before someone comes in backwards or in the dark and rolls down the stairs. To prevent such a disaster, I bought this bright yellow safety chain to run over the hole at the top of the stairs. . It must be deliberately opened and closed when raised or lowered. Of course, this won't restrain your entire body weight, but will give you both visual and tactile feedback that you're approaching a fall.
