Review on πŸ”¨ SurmountWay Self Centering Dowel Jig: Precision Woodworking Tool for Wide Capacity Dowel Hole Drilling by Demetrius Holt

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good quality and accuracy

I ordered this dowel tool specifically to use a 7/16" hole size in my project. The problem is that the hole is 7/16" and not 0.4375" " + is clearance in a few thousandths, it was only .4225". The block is made of carbon steel so it is not easy to pierce to work properly. I ended up using a 1/2" hole that was just the right size for the 1/2" drill bit to easily go through with no play. I haven't tested inserts for smaller sizes other than trying to screw one. The threads didn't fit properly, it took pliers to gently squeeze the insert to remove it. When the unit arrived the sponges were not installed properly. centered, but the video on the Revain website shows how to adjust the jaws. After setting it stayed where it was set. When used on boards with narrower jaws, when clamping the workpiece in the jaws, the central portion through which the drill bits pass sometimes tended to be off-center. This is because there is some play in the guide rods, which allows the center block to twist slightly. With some care in clamping it will be fairly close to center for each hole. There are several manufacturers that sell this product on Revain - the pictures look the same, the description is the same, only the manufacturer's name and price are different. I suspect this product from one of the manufacturers will have the same quality control issues.
