I've had MANY WD drives over the years, both internal and external. I have never changed brands due to their quality (although I now use Seagate for my external devices). I've had more WD Caviar Black than I can remember and they all worked great, quiet and still work. The WD Green I previously used in our surveillance DVR was also silent. When I received this WD Purple because it was a surveillance hard drive, I expected the same quality. Unfortunately, this drive constantly makes quite loud crunching and wheezing noises. We have to crank everything we see to drown out the sound of that chugging hard drive. I don't know if this is a sign that the drive won't last long, but it already sounds like it's in its final stages right out of the box. For the price it should be of the same quality as WD Black and they are quiet.
