Works really well. I had to use a wrench to tighten all the keys (with a rag underneath to protect the finish) but I did it with a Neewer Follow Focus, a CN-160 LED light (battery with charger added) and a Takstar microphone used. So for less than $200 I had a fairly cheap but functional home camera/video setup for a DSLR. After combining the system and camera, I added a dual Opteka cold-shoe splitter with microphone and light, and voila: you have the foundation of what I think is necessary for a homemade version of a home video camera. I filmed my first son's birth a week ago and the results are amazing. I don't have editing software, but if I did the quality would be like film (which I will if I have professional software). I'm a little lazy to upload the video but the picture is attached. Follow the comments to follow the focus: you really need to tighten the screws to follow properly. You don't really see it in the picture but the rubber band under the cam ring is necessary for the fit and proper adjustment (found this tip on youtube) and then I used 2 small zip ties to attach the two sides of the ring so that it snugly With my Cannon lens, the tracking mount ring would not come up (you can see it in the image on the left). Additionally, the elastic strap that keeps the focus securely in place is also crucial as they can often come loose, which as all hobbyists know is nothing you don't want to bother with when recording live. THE BEST. With this focus and light setup, stills are a breeze. Get tail and side lights, turn on the LED and use a light focus. The subject is better illuminated and your gross motor skills take care of the focusing. Anyway there are millions of combos, this is mine and I love it. Contact me with any questions.
