Bread is toasted on one side only. After adjusting the setting, one side of the bread will be well toasted and the other side will be completely burned. Cuisinart customer service will ship a replacement toaster pending receipt of the $10 check and power cord. Time will tell if the replacement will perform like the first toaster. UPDATE 02/24/18: Received replacement toaster. A few pieces of plastic fell out of the packaging when opened. I didn't think it mattered much because the plastic came off the bottom. BUT when trying to use the toaster it was obvious that those little plastic pieces made a big difference - the toaster carriage didn't click to toast. Save yourself the hassle and look for another toaster.
