Although mine came in purple, this is a good, calibrated, easy to read thermometer with a temperature range suitable for home use. For example, I bought a Rubbermaid refrigerator thermometer and used this thermometer to check the temperature in the refrigerator (Rubbermaid showed +2 degrees). The thermometer reads the temperature and the blue liquid on the white scale (with black numbering) quite quickly. easy to read, allowing you to measure temperature quickly and accurately. Although the thermometer itself is glass (so not the best product for young children!), the thermometer comes in a sealed bubble bag containing a sealed vacuum formed plastic carrier. After you open these two disposables, the real thermometer is still protected by its plastic sleeve, which is connected to the top of the thermometer itself to keep it from falling off. As you can see from the product image, the thermometer's plastic tip is blue, but what came to me was purple, and this plastic tip has a loop for connecting to a string or hanging. As for thermometers, there's nothing special or "difficult" about them. It's simple and functional, and most importantly, it's calibrated so you know the temperature displayed is correct.
