Review on πŸ’ͺ Intel Core i7-10700: Powerful 8-Core Desktop Processor up to 4.8 GHz, LGA 1200 by Tim Lea

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Need a better cooler.

I decided to build my new DAW around this processor and I'm glad I did. With Cubase 10.5 I see that only about 25% of the CPU is being used at any given time. I don't intend to use this computer for anything else, but it's important that it's quiet. I've been using the Intel-supplied cooler for a few days, but when I tested it, the processor hit 100Β°C (212Β°F!). It's insanely hot. It was with thermal throttling. I replaced the weak cooler with a 150W TDP. The BIOS message that a tower cooler has been installed (automatically) raises the TDP to 125W. No more throttling and never goes over 60Β°C. (Pretty amazing for a $25 cooler I think.). The fan is not audible from a distance of 30 cm. My projects now take seconds to render instead of minutes. I like it. But my main reason for building a new computer was reliability. I used a 10 year old HP desktop computer.
