I have no idea why I waited so long to replace this part. Five years later and two broken shift tubes it was easy to replace and my shifter looks brand new. I thought it was more difficult, so I kept putting it off. It still annoys me that this part is not only made of very brittle plastic, but can no longer be designed to fail. They ALL break. I don't know of a single 99-04 Ford truck owner (maybe longer) who hasn't had this part snap off with normal use. Last year I got out of my truck at a gas station while it was idling and because that part broke my shifter didn't quite engage, slipped into reverse and before I could stop it, my open driver flipped over. against the pump by bending the hinges, breaking the side panel and pushing the metal panel away from the front of the door. Ford should be held accountable, but like so many other ridiculous Ford issues, they just won't admit it.
