Finally called the manufacturer again, who informed me that the part needed for the repair was missing and that I should try to find it from a third-party manufacturer. No wonder - they don't exist in the offmarket. I called an independent repair company and paid $75 thinking they could start the heater, only to find out the gas valve was defective too. .
