My son broke his headphones and a large chunk was left inside the iPad. I took the iPad to the Apple store - it didn't help, to the cell phone repair shop - it didn't help. I've tried glue, pencil, whatever - doesn't help. This extraction tool was my last hope. To be honest I had very low expectations. The piece that broke was the big one. It technically ended up on the edge of the iPad (easier to extract small bits that are larger on the inside). First I tried a small tube and the metal case of the headphone came out; So I tried a big pipe. I had to hammer it in so the outside edge of the pipe would hit. Although when I pulled the tube out the whole piece was in! This $10 device saved me $300 (the cost of a new tablet). I can no longer use the eject tool, but the iPad works again.
