My daughter is one year old and she loves nature but not our hot sun and this hat is perfect for her little head! The material is very durable (has been washed, soaked in mud, washed again, no major issues), not waterproof I'd say, but it still stays clean when the kids aren't. There is a strap that is attached and in my photo you can see it behind her head as she will try to play with it when it is in front of her. But the thong has an adjustable part where you can adjust it under the chin as needed. For our outdoor purposes, this hat with a back strap is perfect for us.
