Original review: April 19, 2004 --- What a disappointment! After 5 years of using the Pacific Bell Caller ID Unit (model CIDCO DB99) I had no idea that the Caller ID Unit would come without a backlight. We had to use a flashlight to see the display on our wall! (The lamp blurs the display.) The display is adjustable, but of the 5 settings, 1 is so bright it's almost invisible, and 4 and 5 are filled with black boxes around the numbers, making them mostly unreadable. Only setting 3 is acceptable. I ordered it from Advanced American Telecom (although the operator said it was "telephone"). I was given this number after calling SBC to get a replacement for our current box (display faded). Make sure your model has dimmable lighting or something similar. We returned this to the seller for a full refund as we really couldn't use it. Our cordless phone has caller ID, but you have to go off-hook to see it. Update 7/18/05: My original PacBell caller ID (see above) is still fine! I found directions and was able to dim the display - it accidentally got bright because when you press the Delete key and the right or left arrow keys, it gets dimmer or brighter. So it still works and the backlight is still on! Thank goodness because I've never seen another backlit caller ID window before.
