Review on IRISPen Express 6 Pen Scanner by Jonathan Unruh

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Rating for Mac users (as a law student)

I want to rate Mac users.1. I'm a law student trying to use a scanner to consolidate information from a book for print. The books I use have captions over words, lots of highlighting and underlining. I was very reluctant to buy a pen because of the negative reviews.3. I'm using a Macbook Pro (2010) with a stylus. The bottom line is that a pen really works when you use it to write text. Reviews that mention otherwise (I noticed) are mostly written by PC users. The pen really helps to write down all the necessary information. Working with books (only with typescript) The pen works great. Works BEST with a book on a flat surface. (I only had trouble with a very thick book in the first few chapters (where the binding doesn't lay flat on the table. It can read over yellow highlighting with no problem. It has a 60-70% success rate on underlined words. It obviously works best with plain text B. Mac experience I feel like the OCR engine for Mac software is a bit different (although I could be wrong) than the PC version Very few Mac users seem to have a positive experience. C. Realistic expectations. Ideally, the pen would work perfectly in the world. Of course not. But you can definitely tweak the work to make it work better for you. 1. Somehow it depends on the lighting. Insufficient lighting prevents reading the text On the other hand, lighting that is too bright seems to overwhelm the pen and the writing won't be recognized (so don't have your friend hold a flashlight over a book, like we did last weekend). Second, the stylus can VERY quickly recognize call text. If it's underlined or highlighted, slow down. I usually do the whole line (flat, good lighting, clean text) in a quarter of a second. And that's always right 99% of the time. I'm slowing down with selected text and that seems to work fine. Finally, I usually have trouble trying to get only certain words from a page and not the whole line. This may be because I'm using it at the beginning level. Just understand that this technology isn't perfect, but it's pretty good. For the price, you'll save thousands of keystrokes. I just hope this review provides an objective approach that might explain some of the more negative points. If you find any questions or problems, leave a comment and I'll try to answer them. - rob
