I used to buy a small USB powered desktop fan. It let a lot of air out but was a bit noisy. I also plugged it into a smart outlet. If I turn the smart plug off and on again, the fan stays off until I choose a setting. I actually used it to wipe my external hard drive during nightly backups. But it doesn't work when I have to turn it on manually. I found this "little" fan and bought it to try. I say "small" because even the 5 inch fan is a bit bigger than I expected, but not too big. It fits perfectly on my desk and is about the same size as my desktop shredder. I plugged it into a smart plug, made a fan selection, and enabled the smart plug. The fan turned on normally and suddenly became very quiet. If I unplug and plug it back in, the fan starts up again unless I turned the switch off. So this works great for my needs. I also use it for myself when I'm too lazy to walk around the room and turn on the ceiling fan. Plus, it offers just enough direct cooling to keep you comfortable. I love that you can use the selector to toggle clockwise from off to low to high to off and clockwise from low to high and back to off clockwise (a full 360). I absolutely recommend this fan.
