This WILL NOT WORK if both devices (in my example my work and home laptop) are either turned on or their power adapters are plugged into the wall. let me explain. I always leave both laptops plugged into the wall to charge their batteries. For this to work you will need to unplug the AC adapter from the laptop/device you are NOT using (and/or make sure it is turned off) so the splitter doesn't see another device trying to use it. Still a bit of a hassle, but it's easier than unplugging and plugging and swapping Ethernet cables back and forth. Now I can just leave everything connected to the ethernet and just unplug one power supply. So just check the ethernet port on the computer you are NOT using. If green and yellow lights are flickering, power is still present. Simply unplug the power adapter from this device and/or verify that there is no power (by turning it off) and the green and amber lights are not blinking and the splitter is working. OR you need to buy a small 4 port switch. Hope that helps!
