Once you get on the plane and your pet is on the ground in front of you, you can open the extensions on both sides to give your pet more space. This helps them a lot in not feeling too caged. I was able to unzip from three different sides, although there was some room on each, it really made a world of difference for my 9 pound chihuahua. She coped well. It has no space to attach the luggage handles, but you can use the carry handles by attaching them to the luggage handles.
