I have 1 and 2 years. At the top of the stairs, I can't go wrong if I forget to lock the child gate. And I also can't believe my 2 year old won't forget to close the gate behind him. I've been looking for MONTHS for self closing and self locking baby gates that attach to railings. Something like that does not exist. I ordered a handmade gate on Etsy. Self-closing hinges at Home Depot (weigh the gate first. They're heavy) And it's a magic magnetic lock! It's perfect and I couldn't ask for more. I never went by and it wasn't locked. What makes it so secure is the strength of the magnets. But it also makes it incredibly loud. Makes it difficult to sleep but totally worth the quiet at the top of the stairs. I added a cabinet softening rubber ring on the female end of the lock which helped a lot without sacrificing security.
