Pros and cons: The pros and cons outweigh the pros and cons with this power supply

I've been an electrical engineer for over 30 years. I usually go for good stuff like Agilent or Tektronix. But I needed a basic power supply that could provide 60 volts for a simple task (charging e-bike batteries) and this unit seemed adequate in performance and at a reasonable price. What I like: * The fan only turns on when the device needs it (there's a temperature sensor next to the controls, so it only actively cools when needed) * Fairly intuitive layout, everything easy to program, including presets * Relatively accurate, I'd say +/- 2% on both voltage and current, definitely better than I expected for this price* Has a USB interface (which I haven't tried yet but I will one day) Which I don't like * By default the knobs are too close to everything else, there's a risk I'll press one while working on delicate electronics and blow them off just trying to turn the knob. I'd rather have the preset buttons on the left side of the display away from the rest.* The fan is VERY noisy, I replaced it with this one from Revain: B0119SLG18 and it's much better now* Positive (+) connector on the right - -!?! All of my other power supplies have a (+) on the left side. After two weeks of owning the device, "force of habit" compelled me to plug the red wire into the left port and BLAM. I turned off the feed. The repair was easy: all that was needed was a new 1N5408 diode, a $0.60 part. When I replaced the fan I also swapped the red and black connectors as you can see in one of the photos. All in all I would buy this power supply again. But if I did, I'd still swap terminals.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
