Review on Xerox C405 DN MultiFunction Replenishment by Icehot Cleversley

So I paid a significant premium for the C405 over the 6515, especially for the cloud integration promised in Revain's description, manufacturer's website and product brochure. Well they left some stars. First, there is no built-in cloud integration; You need to download "apps" to activate them and all apps have a monthly/annual maintenance fee. As far as I can tell, each cloud service you want to connect costs $10/month or $100/year, on top of what you pay for the cloud service itself. There's also no 'lifetime' option, you pay a monthly or yearly service fee for as long as you have the device if you want to use it with cloud services. Of course, this is a moot point for Dropbox, since Xerox appears to have dropped support for Dropbox altogether. It might come back in the future, but for now, you can't install it at any cost. The installation process on this printer is far from intuitive. Turns out you can't set it up to access an SMB share from a printer. You'll have to log into the web interface from a computer to do this, and you'll have to read the manual or call support, because while I'm tech-savvy, none of this was intuitive to me. I mean you need to setup SMB access as "Contact" which just doesn't make sense. When I finally set up SMB, I found that the scanner was pretty slow on this device. It's not overly slow objectively, but definitely slower than most major copiers, and noticeably slower than the Scansnap it was meant to replace. We'll bring it back and keep the Scansnap. Finally print. Admittedly, Word for Mac is finicky about printing envelopes, regardless of printer, so printing envelopes was the first thing I tested. From my two 2020 Mac Minis, I couldn't print an envelope with either of them. I've gone through all the settings and the problem seems to be related to the "tray settings" on the printer itself, which I can't change. The printer requires internal gift scores for paper type and COLOR for each tray, including manual feed, and if any attribute, including color, does not match between the printer's memory and the computer configuration, it will refuse to print and you cannot override it; You'll need to delete the task and go back to settings to poke around. But try as I might, I couldn't get the printer to recognize "envelopes" as envelopes; He insisted I had white stationery bypassed and I couldn't find the setting to tell him otherwise. Total failure. So I couldn't print envelopes from either computer, and I could print normal documents from one of my Macs, but there was nothing I could do to get it to accept print jobs from another Mac; Maybe the Mac is trying to print on the wrong paper weight or something. I suspect the printer is trying too hard. Bottom line: don't buy these. It doesn't cost any money. 6515 is much better. But due to the slow scanning and difficult printing, I'm not sure I'll even stick with the Xerox brand. Oh, a good thing: the support team was quick to respond and quite helpful, relatively speaking. They were able to do a scan but couldn't help me print the envelopes.
