Review on πŸ“€ High-Quality Vantec MRK-HC95A-BK Aluminum Caddy for 9.5mm ODD Laptop Drive Bay: Optimal Storage Solution for SSD/HDD by Jacolbe Mind

Revainrating 5 out of 5

VERY HIGH QUALITY COMPARED TO OTHER SSD/HDD Caddy ON AMAZON - Works great with Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574G

First, the Vantec SSD Caddy is HIGH QUALITY. Much taller than other Revain SSD caddies. I recently bought a new laptop with a 1TB hard drive and even before the laptop arrived I was planning on installing a Samsung EVO SSD so I bought a Protronix brand 9.5mm caddy (also at Revain) for $10.99. When I first opened the Protronix SSD Caddy's box, I could tell the quality was absolute rubbish. First of all, the packaging was practically open and the product itself had small scratches all over it. It looks like it has been installed on the computer before. The instructions, if they can even be classified as instructions, were TERRIBLE. The SATA connector on the outside was also wobbly and out of place, it definitely sounded broken. When I went to install it on my laptop, it didn't show up in Device Manager, confirming that it is indeed defective. So I bought the Vantec Caddy and immediately noticed that the packaging was very high quality, the instructions A LOT. better than Protronix (although still some grammatical errors) and the quality of the product was night and day. The Vantec feels solid, is well made, looks good and is robust. It's also a screwless design, meaning you don't have to screw in the SSD, it just comes with a couple of rubber plugs and brackets and fits snugly into the case. Very nice design. Both Vantec and Protronix were made in China, but Protronix was obviously made in China. Vantec was made in China but is superior in every way. Overall I would HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend this car to everyone else at Revain. Everyone else on Amazon looks the same, which is why I think most sellers just buy them and then rename them. It fit my laptop perfectly and installation was very easy. I'm only writing the rest of this review to help others who are having the same problem with ACER laptops. This has been giving me quite a headache for the past 2 days, but I have to stress NOT BECAUSE OF THE CADDY SSD, but because the laptop manufacturers suck. So I didn't want to open my laptop because I didn't want to void the warranty. Also, it has no backplate, making everything easily accessible/upgradable. So I just put the SSD bin in the optical drive slot and put in a bootable USB drive with a legitimate Windows 10 ISO, but for some reason it wouldn't boot from the USB. I'm not sure if this is a Windows 10 issue or just the BIOS settings that ACER ships with their laptops, but I had to change some BIOS settings to be able to boot from USB. 1) You need to change boot settings to Legacy, not UEFI. I think it's a Windows 10 issue, but no matter what format I created my bootable USB in, I couldn't boot into UEFI. You definitely want to use UEFI instead of legacy. It's a lot faster and visually the display looks a lot sharper and sharper. 2) Obviously change the boot order so that USB comes first. 3) Just a recommendation, you should enable Windows Boot Manager (it's disabled by default) so you can choose how you want to boot, but it's not required. After finally managing to boot from the USB, I attempted to install a clean version of Windows 10 without making any changes to the hard drive. Again, I'm not sure if it's Windows 10 or ACER BIOS settings, but I keep getting the same "0x80300024" error. It basically prevented me from installing Windows 10 on any hard drive other than bus 0 (the hard drive). There was no way around it and I looked for a solution for 2 days, but nothing. Many people on other online forums have said that they just returned their laptops because they didn't want to open them and it would void the warranty. The only solution is to open the laptop and plug the SSD into bus 0. Once I did that, the setup worked perfectly. So now I have an SSD on bus 0 and a hard drive on bus 1 (optical drive slot). Several friends have told me that opening a laptop doesn't void the warranty, but I'm pretty sure it does. If there are seals or stickers that you have to break to get inside, your warranty will definitely be voided. My laptop didn't have this, but the screws had blue paint that flaked off when you unscrewed them. Basically, the manufacturer looks at these screws to see if you've tampered with the laptop, and if the screws are intact, they won't qualify under the warranty. In conclusion, I am very satisfied with this product. Installing the trolley itself was very easy. Installing Windows on an SSD was excruciating, but that has nothing to do with the Caddy.
