which was actually quite funny. Invest 50 cents in some hardwood planks.

If you are making your own bench, the ideal bench top should be 2.5 inches thick. If it's thinner, you'll have to use spacers, which is problematic. If it's thicker you'll have to pry out a 5lb hammer and chisel set, which was actually pretty fun. Invest 50 cents in some hardwood planks to attach to the jaws (0.5" thick, using some wood screws 2" long and 1/4" for one side). bolted to a workbench, and some 1.25" and 1/4" locking bolts with nuts and washers for the moveable jaw. You will need a countersink or 1/2" wood drill bit if you want to use hex head screws instead of a plate. As for the handle, throw a few bucks into the drill guide (I used a Milescraft 1312 drill block) and ironically clamp the handle itself in a vise. Drill about 1/8 inch. pilot holes, then install the handle and use a screwdriver to install 2 #8 1" coarse wood screws. Works great. Finally, invest in some bench stops and a rail so you have 3/4" wide, 1, Can install 5" deep holes in bench top. Works wonders for planing and sanding.
