First real carpenter's vise

I have used vise, clamps and other metalworking tools and tools on my workbench but this is my wife's Christmas present. It works well. It took me very little time to master the interrupted screw that allows you to instantly adjust the opening of the jaw. I have yet to install bench stops on my workbench, but I plan to do this for planing and routing large workpieces.

Pros
  • For small woodwork
Cons
  • Vanish

which was actually quite funny. Invest 50 cents in some hardwood planks.

If you are making your own bench, the ideal bench top should be 2.5 inches thick. If it's thinner, you'll have to use spacers, which is problematic. If it's thicker you'll have to pry out a 5lb hammer and chisel set, which was actually pretty fun. Invest 50 cents in some hardwood planks to attach to the jaws (0.5" thick, using some wood screws 2" long and 1/4" for one side). bolted to a workbench, and some 1.25" and 1/4" locking bolts with nuts and washers for the moveable jaw. You will need a…

excellent vise in desktop vise

Based on old reviews of this product I was concerned about damage in transit. They were a few years old and haven't had any problems lately. My vise arrived in a double box and I had no problems. It arrived in just a few days. This is the first thing I bought from Amazon. The vise even has instructions with a template which was helpful. The vise is easy to use and is held in place with a simple clamp. I read some reviews about using a set of o-rings under the end caps so I bought some 1"…

I had to break out a 5 pound hammer and chisel set, which was actually pretty fun. Good vise but big surprise

This vise from Jorgensen has great features and a good level of fit and finish. The included mounting template was spot on, possibly fixed after other reviewers complained about it. However, I had a major design issue when installing it. I never thought that the toe-in would be done entirely on the fixed jaw portion of the vise for a better grip. The moving jaw is machined almost exactly at 90 degrees to the guide rods, while the fixed jaw is approximately 1/16 inch from the bed, bottom to top,

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for seniors
