When building your own bench, a 2.5 inch thick bench top is ideal. If it's thinner, you'll need to use spacers, which is a problem. I had to break out a 5 pound hammer and chisel set, which was actually pretty fun. Invest 50 cents in some hardwood planks to attach to the jaws (0.5" thick, with a 2" long plate on 1/4" screws for one side that bolts to the table, and a couple of 1.25". long stop bolt and 1/4" with nuts and washers for the moving jaw. You want to use hex head screws in place of the plate. 8" pilot holes, then install the handle and use a screwdriver to install 2x #8 coarse 1" wood screws. Works like a spell n a few bench stops and a guide so you can fit 3/4" wide x 1.5" deep holes in the bench top Works wonders for planing and sanding.
