My 3 year old urinates a lot at night so we tried some waterproof mattress pads to find a quality yet affordable mattress pad. pillow. That's it! It's well made, will stand up to many hours in the washer and dryer, is soft and is perfect for our crib mattress pads. I think that even with a waterproof mattress, the added protection has some benefit. It keeps my kids dry and comfortable. I bought four of these pads in total so we never run out of one!
