First, California Kings are almost - almost - square, so sheets and mattress pads can be a real bear when laid out right. This bedspread has stripes that make it easier, except the stripes are counterintuitive: they go across the bed, not over it. We thought we were the wrong size until we found out. However, we do have a giant old-fashioned water-bag mattress with a waterbed frame that we just love. We wear a 3 inch foam/gel topper on it these days instead of using a heater and this thick pad keeps cat claws at bay. But that means we need a waterproof cover to match that thick mattress and topper. The waterproof part protects us from possible leaks and also protects the expensive foam/gel topper from spills and nasty cats. our rickety mattress with no problems. It also keeps the gel pad from moving and is smooth and comfortable under the sheets. The pillow is washable and dries easily. I like it, in a pinch - maybe the sheets didn't do it. We've got the dryer out and ready to go to bed - this flannel lining doubles as a bed sheet so we don't have to wait for the dryer to finish. Five stars overall. We like it very much. pillow!
