I recently discovered that all the phone jacks in my house are wired with CAT5e cables. I immediately ordered materials for resealing so I could implement my house's new superpower. After installing all the cables in the patch panel below, I connected the identification keys to the panel and walked around the house, terminating the other ends and noting which port number belonged to which room. Eventually I had a friend manage the far end and plug it into each port while I walked around the house checking each one. Then it happened. test failed. I reterminated both ends and it still didn't work. If I hadn't checked this launch I would have gone insane trying to figure out what went wrong. I found out that some butcher from the cable company at one point hooked up a real phone line to reel 5 in the attic and then buried the evidence in insulation. I cut this section in half and finished both halves in the attic. All tests passed. Then I fixed every problem in the world with a POE access point/switch at that intersection in the attic.
