More of a cream than a balm. The consistency is rather pasty, reminiscent of Elmer's beige glue. Immediately after applying I noticed a strong smell. In my opinion, when applied, it produces a strong aroma that reminds me of freshly cut weeds from the garden. It smells very similar to cut grass but with a little spice. The woman says the smell wears off pretty quickly for those standing nearby, but it still smells nice. However, the texture of the cream surprises me. It's not really a balm and doesn't hold hair in place very well. If anything, it added more volume to my beard than any hair product. It's great when I want my beard to look lush and thick, but when I'm trying to tame my hair for a more professional look I just can't use it.
