Found holes in my favorite sweater overnight. I went insane My husband and I have thousands of dollars worth of wool suits and blazers in a shared closet. I decided to hand wash them all with Eucalan. I saw a YouTube video of a dry cleaner owner showing how to wash a wool blazer. He pre-dyed some areas, threw the jacket in an LG washing machine with a special detergent and washed it in the cold on the hand/wool cycle without spinning. he let it dry and stroked it. So far I have made six wool suits, two lined wool blazers, one lined corduroy blazer, a pair of lined linen blazers, a selection of wool sweaters and silk scarves. The only fabric I haven't washed is the lined silk. I do them by hand because it takes less time and water and I can control and watch closely what I'm doing. Many of my dry cleaned items in my garment bags are much softer, lighter in color and smell much cleaner. the idea that "dry cleaning" doesn't really clean things the way it's supposed to. Also, these solvents are not very safe for health or the environment and will shorten the lifespan of these suits. From now on I'm going to "steam clean" at home (seal your clothes with one of those bags you get with the Dryel wet towel kit and run the dryer for 30 minutes as usual). And wash them if necessary. Here's how I do it: Mix a tablespoon of Eucalane in a cup or two of room temperature water. Even if the suit jacket looks clean, turn it inside out and soak problem areas with this solution. I dip a small cotton swab into this solution and dab it through my armpits, neck, and sleeves until saturated. DO NOT rub or wring, just blot until solution is absorbed. Then I add another tablespoon of Eucalan plus 3 or 4 gallons of water to a small tub or bucket and dip my jacket in it. I don't process my pants, I just soak them. Leave it there for 10-15 minutes. You can see some color bleeding on the jackets. It usually comes from the felt area behind the neck, and that's okay. After 10-15 minutes, take the jacket out of the dirty soapy bath, put it in clean water, and then put it back in clean water until the water runs clear. The same with pants. Hang your jacket to dry on a slightly curved suit/garment hanger to keep it in shape. Smooth out the sleeves and seams, making sure the collar folds neatly with no creases as it dries. To dry, hang your trousers vertically on a hanger (the waist of the trousers is around the hanger and the leg hangs down without bending). They should be dry in about 16 hours. I iron my trousers at wool temperature. I turn the jacket inside out, iron the lining, turn it inside out and iron the details of the collar, neckline, lapels and flap pockets, then use the steamer to remove the wrinkles. I have to say that I am very, very happy with the results.
