My little goldfish in the pond has been thriving on this product for almost 15 years. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and there was something less potent in the water, maybe chlorine... I really don't know. I've heard that chlorine evaporates with water molecules and doesn't become toxic. I know this area switched to a product called Chloronol a few years ago. This somehow bound the chemical to the water, and it became toxic as the water evaporated and formed a more durable substance. My fish became lethargic and sank to the bottom. I went to an aquarium store and they sold me a bottle of it. After changing toxic water and using this product I never had problems again. I used to buy drinking water in five gallon containers, which was expensive and required a lot of labor to carry around. After the water has evaporated from the pool, I simply fill the pitcher with water from the hose, add 25 drops of AmQuel and it's done! This is a great product and I highly recommend it for your freshwater fish.
