I have always avoided buying an apple knife as I thought I could easily cut an apple with a knife so why waste money on another gadget . However, there are times when you want to remove the core but don't want to cut into an apple or pear and it's a pain without such a device. It works great and I love that it opens up to make removing the core from the device much easier. In addition, the cross grip makes it easier to work with pressure than a straight grip.
