I used this to clean a new fish tank and it worked fine. It took 2-3 weeks to complete the cycle. The directions say it's not necessary to add more stability after seven days, but I continued to add a maintenance dose daily until the cycle was complete. Be sure to check the water regularly when there are animals in the aquarium, and don't assume everything will be fine after seven days. Take the first strong dose according to the instructions and the volume of your aquarium. Then check for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates every day. Ammonia rises first. Once enough bacteria have eaten up the ammonia, nitrite levels begin to rise. The next event will be a drop in ammonia levels to zero, but nitrite levels will remain high. Once enough bacteria have eaten the nitrite, it drops to zero and you end up with nitrates. Once you have zero ammonia and nitrite and start detecting nitrate, your tank will go through a cycle. If animals are in the tank during this process, treat the water with Seachem Prime daily. Ammonia and nitrite are highly toxic. Prime renders them harmless to livestock, but bacteria will still eat them, so don't worry about Prime slowing down your cycle. Also add Seachem StressGuard daily until the cycle is complete to preserve the fish's mucous membrane. Change 25-50% of the water at least once a day if you have significant ammonia and/or nitrite levels. This will not stop your cycle as most bacteria will stick to the filter media and aquarium items and this will help reduce the amount of toxins whilst the bacterial colonies are too small to accommodate them all. I also use a maintenance dose of stability every time I do a water change, change/clean filter media, or add livestock. Additionally, I add StressGuard and Seachem Pristine, another form of bacteria that helps with waste disposal.
