I've bought many different air filters for my house without even doing any research into what I'm actually buying. I've spent over $25 on a filter at various stores. After doing my research, I found that I could order these filters that are not 'brand name' to save money and also protect the air in my house as well as the furnace. Here's what MERV 8 was designed for: MERV 5 β 8 Most commercial applications and premium residential buildings 75% to 85% of all particles in your air are captured by the filter. You can also increase the MERV rating, which increases the collection of particles. The MERV rating goes up to MERV16, which captures 95% of airborne particles. These filters are ideal for home use. I hope this helps to understand these abbreviations a little better and which filter is better because I had no idea until I did a little research. Also, the edges of the filters can be easily bent, so please be careful when installing. I would start at the edges on one side. Press firmly against the vent frame, and then insert the other side. If the correct dimensions have been ordered, installation should be simple, quick and without damaging the filter itself.
